E.O.F.T.

On the 5th of December, we'll be attending the E.O.F.T. - the European Outdoor Film Tour.

This year's theme is White Dreams: You better warp up warm because a good deal of this program is freezing cold. Lots of snow and ice: an expedition to Baffin Island, Freeriding, Speedflying and Ice climbing. To keep you from freezing to you seats we've also put some warm ingredients in the program mix: Kajaking in Brazil, Climbing in Kyrgystan, a walking-tour through China and of course Mountainbiking!

Check it out on http://www.eoft.eu.

Overschoenen (Shoe covers)

Hi!

Today's lesson: when it's wet, rainy, muddy and cold, use shoe covers! Highly underestimated piece of equipment but oh so effective:The covers are great:
- Designed to protect you against cold and wet conditions.
- Neoskin waterproof layer on top of 3 mm neoprene offers the best protection against the cold and rain.
- Glued seams make them 100% leak proof.
- Reflective industrial-strength YKK zipper.
-Two Kevlar reinforcements between sole and zipper and on the nose.
- Velcro rubber strap for a secure fit.

The proof!

Houffalize

Houffalize - "parel van de Ardennen", they call it, "the pearl of the Ardennes". And it truly is a beauty (even in the pissing rain). The town has a great vibe, from the minute you enter the village, you see mountainbikers everywhere, gearing up or heaving a post ride frietje.

It is the mekka of Belgian mountainbiking: 6 tracks covering over a 160km:
1. Yellow - 18km - easy
2. Blue - 27km - medium difficulty
3. Red - 35km - difficult and technical
4. Red - 40km - difficult and no so technical
5. Blue - 28km - medium difficulty, smooth ride
6. Green - 21km - difficult and technical

Make sure you pick up a map at the tourist office. All tracks start in the little square in front of it. Double check that your preferred route is open (routes can be closed due to hunting - schedule available at... the tourist office of course). Due to the limited access to the different tracks, we did a combination of the yellow and red 4 track. Route was extremely heavy because of the rain and the tones of mud, but a fantastic ride! One down side following your ride: there's nowhere to rinse off your bike. We improvised and cleaned our bikes in the river. Good tip: easy acces behind hotel du Commerce.

Houffalize also hosts a stage within the World Cup Mountainbiking - http://www.houffalize-worldcup.be/2010.

Other interesting annual events are the 24h of Tavigny-Houffalize and the Houffa Marathon. We'll be competing in the marathon: Jen goes for the 30km, Bert's doing the 75km! http://www.houffamarathon.be.

Will ya take the challenge??

... Til the next ride!

Routes

The best collection of routes in Belgium, you can find on http://www.mtbroutes.be/. Listed per province and per city. Offers very usefull information about the tracks (such as difference in level, ratio paved vs unpaved roads, single tracks,...). It also has the possibility to leave comments for other bikers, always nice to experiences from other people and great if a recommended route worked out!

Gear

As everyone knows, it's always nice to have the right equipment for MTB-ing. Good gear means less or no unexpected trouble along the road and it gets your performance up.

For the bike, we have chosen the Bulls King Boa:

Jen en Bert fietsen

Dear Friends, Family and whoever lands on this blog, Welcome!

After years and years of playing soccer (I miss it that much I can't even recall how long I had been playing the game), and many injuries later I decided to call it a day. I truly had enough of the way too many practices and having to spend the whole Sunday away, so Jen and I came up with the idea of cycling/mountainbiking.

First, I thought cycling was something retired people do on sunday mornings, especially because there always seems to be a after-bike get-together with drinks. Wrong! Cycling and especially mountainbiking are awesome! There's no better way to spend time together in the outdoors, than by exploring the forests, the canals and the farm fields by riding a little dirt path.

Because we like to keep track of the trails we ride, and to show everybody Belgium has quite a lot of nice routes to offer, we decided to write a blog about it...

So have fun reading and if you know about good routes or any recommendations about equipment, gear or bikes, let us know!

Jen & Bert

For everybody who's wondering, "Jen en Bert fietsen" means Jen and Bert ride a bike!
